January 18, 2013

Abbeville County Sheriff Charles Goodwin has been indicted by the South Carolina State Grand Jury.

Sheriff Goodwin resigned from his position Monday evening.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson says that Goodwin has been charged with one count of misconduct in office.

In the indictment, it sites that Goodwin allegedly demanded and received cash “kickbacks” from county funds paid to a local auto shop from about January 1998 until November 2011.

It also claims that Goodwin used the services of a South Carolina Department of Corrections inmate to work on personal vehicles and property belonging to Goodwin and his family.

A hearing is scheduled for noon today in the Greenville County General Sessions Court at the Greenville County Courthouse.
