The local Toys for Tots program makes the holidays a little brighter for some local children.

Toys for Tots held its main distribution day on Friday at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Toccoa.

Don Alexander is the Toys for Tots coordinator for Elbert, Stephens, Franklin, Hart, Habersham, and White counties. He says that the demand for assistance this holiday season was again higher than last year.

“We had so many names this year,” said Alexander. “As of right now, we are at just about 1800 kids and last year was 1,600 something not counting the ministries, which took us up towards 1,900,” said Alexander.

While demand was high, Alexander does say that the community in northeast Georgia has come through yet again to meet that need.

“We have been able to meet the demand thanks to a whole lot of people out there that came through for us,” said Alexander.

Alexander says he appreciates all of the support from the community.

He also thanked the many volunteers who helped him at the distribution in Toccoa Friday, as well as a distribution Thursday in Habersham County.

Alexander says next year, Habersham and White counties will have their own Toys for Tots coordinator due to the growing demand throughout the region.

The “Toys for Tots” program began back in 1947.  Since then, Alexander said that nationwide 450 million toys have been collected.  In 2011, 17 million toys were collected nationwide for 7.4 million children.
