Athens-Clarke County Dealing with Similar Scam that Was Seen in Elberton/Elbert County

July 28, 2014

Similar to a scam that occurred in Elberton, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department says someone is calling people pretending to be one of their officers.

Just like the scam with callers in Elberton pretending to be members of the Elberton Police Department, they are trying to request money be wired to them.

Major Mike Seizmore is with the Athens-Clarke County police, and says it’s an old scam that has resurfaced.

He talks about what the best approach is to dealing with these types of calls.

“They may say its and Officer Smith, or use a fairly common name that most agencies would have”, said Seizmore. “The best thing to do is hang up the phone and call, and recognize that law enforcement does not collect money.

By call Seizmore means call the agency that the scammers are acting like they represent.

“I would encourage anyone to look on a website and call the actual agency if you have a question, but don’t just call the number that shows up on caller ID”, said Seizmore.

If you receive a call similar to this one, because it could still be happening in the Elberton/Elbert County area, then hang up and contact your local law enforcement agency.

Never give out any personal or financial information over the phone.
