Participants from the 5K at Sandy Creek.

This past Saturday, the Athens branch of the Free to Breathe Organization held their 5th Annual One Mile and 5K Race at Sandy Creek Park in Athens, Georgia.

Tiffany Hudak, who founded the event, said that the race featured over four hundred runners, and that they raised approximately $47,000.

Hudak said the only thing left to improve on is getting the word out about lung cancer.

“We are very pleased where we are, this is five years that we have held this event. The first year we raised $6,000; and four years later we are over 400 participants and $47,000 raised”, said Hudak. “I think what we can do to make the event better is to get the word out about lung cancer, and that it can literally affect anyone, as it is not just a smoker’s disease anymore.”

The organization’s website will continue to accept donations until December 31st. To donate, head over to www.freetobreathe.com/athens.
