Blood Drive Taking Place in Elbert County on Monday

May 10, 2013

The American Red Cross is getting ready to host several blood drives in the Northeast Georgia area, one of which will be taking place in Elbert County.

American Red Cross Donor Recruiter Janet Jarrett explains that blood drives like this are vital for what the Red Cross is trying to accomplish.

“They are very very important, this is something that will touch most of us in our lifetime; either we will need blood, or someone we know will”, said Jarrett. “Everyone’s life is affected by the generosity of blood donors; almost everyone has someone in their family who wouldn’t be here today if someone hadn’t donated blood.”

The summer months are when they have the biggest issues with maintaining a healthy reserve of donor blood, since a majority of their donations come from school and colleges in the fall and spring.

She says that donated blood is used in several different applications.

“There are so many different uses for blood”, says Jarrett. “Cancer patients are treated with blood, people who undergo life saving surgery, people with different blood disorders, and people who have experienced severe burns are treated with blood plasma.”

The blood drive in Elbert County will take place at the First Baptist Church ROC Building on Monday May 13th from 1:00pm until 6:00pm.

Jarrett says that the entire donation process takes about an hour for most people, but only about five minutes of that is spent actually donating blood.
