The Elbert County Blue Devil basketball squads were in action against Madison County Friday to start the season. Both teams game away with wins in their season openers
The Lady Devils came away with a win over the Lady Raiders 51-40, their first win against the Lady Raiders since 2005. It would be a slow offensive game for both teams as midway through the first quarter the Lady Devils would be up 4-0. By the end of the first the Lady Devils would maintain the lead with a 9-6 score. In the second quarter the Devils would work on extending their lead and midway through the quarter the Ladies would take a 27-14 lead. With the clock ticking down to the half there would be a crazy finish of the ball changing possession a number of times; however, the Lady Devils would come away with a 30-18 lead.
In the third quarter the Lady Raiders would try to stage a comeback cutting the Devils lead to only six. However, the girls would fight through a sloppy third quarter and head into the 4th with a ten point 39-29 lead. The fourth quarter would not see any points scored until over two minutes in when Madison County would score and Elbert would answer. The Lady Devils would hold on for a 51-40 win and start out the season with a win.
The Blue Devils would also come away with a win of the Red Raiders as they controlled the entire game. The Boys would jump out to a quick 8-2 lead and really not look back; however the Raiders would come close by the end of the first with a 13-9 score. Going into the second the Devils would thrive going up quickly and would enter the half with a 33-18 lead.
Starting the second half the Red Raiders would try to chip away at the Blue Devil lead; however, the Devils would have none of it and maintain a 52-36 lead heading into the final quarter. The Blue Devils would not let up in the fourth as the Moon brothers would lead the Devils to their first victory of the season with a 81-53 win.
