This past Friday night the Elbert County Blue Devils football team traveled to Apalachee to face the Wildcats in an exhibition bout. The Blue Devils struck first following a fumble recovery by RJ Jones all the way to the Wildcats’ 4 yard line. Freshman quarterback Mecole Hardman carried the pigskin across the goal line to put The Devils up by a TD. In the second quarter The Wildcats scored two rushing touchdowns. Jody Mathis scored from 4 yards out on 4th down in the latter part of the period. Neither of these scores were followed by successful PATs. Apalachee lead 12-7 at the half.
Keardrick Tucker rushed in for an 8 yard touchdown in the 3rd. The extra point was no good. Elbert took the lead 13-12. The Wildcats delivered their last shred of productive offense in the final minutes of the quarter with another rushing TD. The PAT was once again no good. Apalachee took the lead one last time, 18-13. The Blue Devils’ offense came alive in the 4th.Their first strike was a 1 yard TD run by Tarvelle Fortson. Elbert went for two, but were unsuccessful. Tra Barnett gave The Devils some much needed cushion with a 14 yard TD run. Before Elbert’s defense hermetically sealed their victory, Jason Bowman converted the only two-point conversion for either side.
The final score of The Blue Devil’s “week zero” contest was 27-18. Coach Fritz saw good and bad in his team’s performance Friday night and recognizes the adjustments to be made before Elbert’s season opener.
