Bridge on Plantation Road Over Coldwater Creek to be Closed on Monday

August 23, 2012

On Monday August 27th, the bridge on Plantation Road over Coldwater Creek in Elbert County will be completely closed to traffic for demolition and construction of a new bridge, which will also begin next week.

Georgia Department of Transportation Communications Officer, Teri Pope, explained why the bridge is being re-built.

“The bridge is structurally deficient right now. It is currently a one lane bridge, and it is a timber bridge.” Pope described. “It is literally made out of wooden posts, and it is kind of pitiful. We don’t want traffic using the bridge; it has extreme weight limits on it now, and it needs to be replaced.”

The current bridge will be completely closed to traffic until February 28th, 2013; though it could open sooner if construction finishes ahead of schedule.

Pope says that the newly constructed bridge will be much safer than the old timber bridge that it is replacing.

“The new bridge will meet current standards. The old bridge was built in the 40’s, and it meets no standards that are around today. The new bridge will have two twelve foot lanes, plus it will have a paved shoulder area. So, if you have an accident or have car trouble you will be able to get out of the lane of traffic and onto the shoulder.” said Pope.

Traffic will be detoured around the bridge site until it is reopened in February. The detour route is as follows:

The 6.5 mile detour route directs traffic from south on Plantation Road to south on Paul Motes Road, east on Double Bridges Road, northwest on Coldwater Road and west on Plantation Road.

The contract completion date is July 31st, 2013, and the cost of the project will be just north of $600,000. The contractor that the work was awarded to was Rogers Bridge Company, which operates out of offices in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia.
