The body of a Canon man, killed in a fatal wreck on SR17 Monday night has been sent to the GBI Crime Lab for autopsy.
It happened just after 7p Monday night on SR17 southbound between Bowersville and Canon.
Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland said 31-year old Vergil Steven Bennett of Canon died when his 1996 Ford pick-up suddenly left the road.
“The pick-up apparently just left the road. There were no signs of him braking. It clipped a power pole,” Cleveland said.
According to the GSP incident report, Bennett’s truck then crossed a private drive and struck a mailbox and a utility pole before traveling over another private drive.
He then struck a fence and tree before coming to a stop.
Cleveland said a tractor trailer traveling behind the pick up drove into downed power lines.
“It got wrapped up in the power lines and it slid to a stop. It took about three hours to get the power lines off and the power restored,” Cleveland said.
Cleveland said law enforcement from Hart and Franklin Counties as well two troopers from the Georgia State Patrol responded to the scene.
Cleveland said it’s not clear yet whether rain may have played a role in the accident and the GSP continues to investigate.
