Christmas has come and gone and the countdown has already begun for some on when they can expect Santa to come back to town, but today, lane closure suspensions remain in place to allow those traveling back from their respective Christmas destinations, to do so safely.
The Georgia DOT announced just before Christmas, that all scheduled and ongoing construction related lane closures on interstates and major state routes have been suspended, making traveling a bit safer across the state.
Lane closures will be suspended from now until 5:00am on Thursday, January 2nd, 2014.
Georgia DOT Spokesperson Teri Pope says contract clauses allow lane closures to be suspended on high volume traffic periods.
“Because there is going to be more vehicles on the road than typical, we put clauses in our contracts that forbid lane closures on these high volume travel weekends”, said Pope.
Some work however, may continue on lesser-traveled state and local roads, and motor vehicle accident or emergency maintenance closures can occur on any route.
Those traveling can check traffic and condition maps on www.georgia-navigator.com, or call 511 on any phone for free, real time traffic information.
