Voters in Lavonia have no city council seats to decide on because both seats up for re-election are uncontested.

However voters there will have one referendum to consider on whether to allow local restaurants to sell alcohol on Sundays.

In August, the Lavonia City Council voted to put the referendum on the ballot, according to City manager Gary Fesperman, after the city was contacted by several local establishments.

“This has to be done through a referendum and a vote by the city,” he said. “Once the council received the petition, they went ahead and approved a resolution to put it on the ballot.”

Those restaurants include J Peters on SR17, La Cabana Mexican Restaurant on Jones St., and Moe’s on Main St.

However, he emphasized the referendum, if it passes, only applies to Sunday alcohol sales at restaurants.

“This is pouring only, no retail,” he said. “It doesn’t apply to any retailer selling alcohol, beer or wine out of the coolers in packages. This is for pouring only.”

Fesperman said so far, he has not had any input from the public on the issue.
