Controlled Burn in Elbert County Smokes Up Elberton

November 12, 2013

Those concerned yesterday about a smoky day in Elberton, can rest easy.

According to Elbert County Fire Chief Rick Mewborne, a controlled burn was being conducted off of Old Middleton Road.

He says that approximately sixty acres were burned.

Controlled burns are common this time of year during the cooler months to reduce fuel buildup and to decrease the potential of hotter fires.

Mewborne also mentioned that another controlled burn was taking place in Wilkes County at roughly the same time as the one off Old Middleton road, which may have resulted in an extra smoky Elbert County yesterday afternoon.
