County Government Working Diligently to Balance Fiscal Year 2014 Budget

June 3, 2013

With the month of June here already, that means it is time for local governing bodies to buckle down and prepare their respective budgets for the upcoming fiscal year.

Fiscal year 2014 begins on July 1st, 2013; and Elbert County Administrator Bob Thomas says they have been working on the budget for the last several months.

According to Thomas, the county’s tax digest has decreased steadily over the last three years, which has made it tougher to balance out the budget.

He says they started off in a pretty big hole when first trying to piece together the FY 2014 budget.

“We started out the process about a half a million dollars in the hole; over these last three months we have trimmed down after meeting with our department heads”, explained Thomas. “We are still meeting with them, sometimes on a daily basis, to trim as much as we can from this budget.”

However, as of last Thursday, he says that the deficit has been trimmed down to less than a hundred thousand dollars.

Thomas is expecting to present the Elbert County Commission a balanced budget when they meet for their work session tomorrow evening.
