The Elbert County School Board approved another measure yesterday evening that will affect school security.
According to School Superintendent Rick Higginbotham, board attorneys have researched and found that if the school board approved, then the school security officer would be allowed to carry their weapon on campus, and have full arrest powers.
During the meeting, Board Member Jeff Burden made the motion.
“I make a motion that the Elbert County Board of Education herby authorize the director of security for the provision of safety, security, investigative, and law enforcement services on school property; to have the same law enforcement power”, said Burden. “That includes the power to carry weapons, and have the power to make arrests.”
The motion was approved with a unanimous four to zero vote, as board member P Jo Phelps was not present during yesterday’s meeting.
