The Elberton City Council recently asked the Elbert County Board of Education to take action of the Hawes Facility, located off of Mill Street.
Elbert County School Superintendent Rick Higginbotham said that the board only just recently took control of the property.
“We’ve just got control of this property within the last couple of months, and I have only just received the deed to the property today (Monday)”, said Higginbotham.
The board plans on selling the property, and will advertise for bids that will be opened later this month on April 26th.
If the property can not be sold, then Higginbotham says that something is going to have to be done.
The main problem is with the front building that is facing the Mill Street side of the property.
As a contingency plan of sorts, Higginbotham has asked Rick Mewborne to begin pricing out asbestos removal so that demolition of the property could potentially take place.
A course of action will not be officially decided upon until next Monday at the absolute earliest, as this was only a work session.
