Slowly but surely progress is being made by the Hartwell Railroad Company in their quest to construct an interchange between themselves and CSX Transportation Inc.

The Hartwell Railroad begins at an interchange with a Norfolk Southern line in Toccoa, GA and currently ends in Elbert County.

The group is hoping to construct an additional 1,400 feet of railroad to connect with the CSX line.

Speaking to the Elbert County Board of Commissioners yesterday evening, Attorney for the Hartwell Railroad Matt Williams read a statement that explained the purpose of this project.

“Is to provide a workable connection between the Hartwell Railroad Company and CSX Transportation, Inc. for increased mobility and to provide economic shipping competitiveness for its existing and future customers including those citizens of Elbert County”, read Williams.

Before moving forward with the construction plan, Williams said that the project has to be approved by the United States Surface Transportation Board.

In addition to the transportation board’s approval, it is also required that the Hartwell Railroad receive the support of the Elbert County Board of Commissioners through a resolution.

Soon after Mr. Williams concluded his prepared statement, the commission voted unanimously to adopt a resolution of support for the construction of an interchange between the Hartwell Railroad Company and CSX Transportation Inc.
