On Thursday, September 21 a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the newly extended Elbert County Airport. There was also a ceremony dedicating the terminal at the Airport to be named after Gena and Crayton Phelps. The Phelps family originally deeded the land for the construction of the Airport and a monument was unveiled in their honor. The airport was extended 1000 feet.
Randy Haralson, the airport manager, said the extension has been in the works for a long time.
“We started actually working on this project back in 2007. It’s a long process, but we got a grant from the state of Georgia for 1.3 million dollars to do this project”, said Haralson.
This extension will allow for corporate jets to land on the airfield which will hopefully bring industry to Elberton”, explained Haralson.
