The Elbert County Airport’s thousand foot runway extension project is approaching its completion date.

Elbert County Administrator Bob Thomas explained what work still needed to be done out at the airfield.

“We still have to do the striping and the lights along the extended runway before the project will be complete” said Thomas.

A part of the project is the re-surfacing of Von Trina Drive, which leads down to the Airport. That portion of the project was put out for bid, and the Elbert County Board of Commissioners awarded the contract for the re-surfacing to E.R. Snell.

Thomas said that they are hoping to have the airport open to air traffic soon.

“Once they get the striping done by the end of the month, we are anticipating that it will be open to air traffic around the first of September.” said Thomas.

The Commissioners are shooting for an official opening and dedication of the terminal on September 20th at 5:00pm.
