Elbert County Resident Victim of Craigslist Scam

February 25, 2013

Recently an Elbert County resident was the victim of an infamous Craigslist scam.

Investigator Darren Scarborough, with the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office, describes how the person was set up.

“Was looking for a home health care position on Craigslist; was contacted by someone through Craigslist, and they sent this person a check, and they person was instructed to deposit the check in their account”, explained Scarborough. “They were then told to send Western Union checks to them in lieu of medical supplies to take care of the elderly person.”

The victim had been scammed out of nearly three thousand dollars.

Scarborough says that when using Craigslist, or any other online site, to keep an eye out for things that don’t seem right.

“If someone sends you a check and asks you to deposit it in your account and send them money via Western Union, let a red flag go up”, said Scarborough. “Because it should be a real good indication something is wrong, because if they are sending you money, why would they ask you to send money back.”

The job that that the victim was interested in was based in Athens, but the check received came from Illinois.

He says details like that should be another thing that raises a red flag.

According to Scarborough, the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office has worked several cases similar to this one in the past.
