Elbert County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Shooting Incident

The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a shooting, which occurred Sunday evening at a Dempsey Brown Road address.

Elbert County Sheriff Barry Haston said the call came in at 7:01pm that Meredith Watkins had been shot in the abdomen. Deputies and Emergency Personnel arrived on scene and treated the victim, who was then air lifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where she is currently in stable condition.

Sheriff Haston said that investigators believe that Watkins was shot while outside attending to livestock. Mrs. Watkins told investigators that she very possibly could have been shot by a deer hunter.

This is an active investigation by the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Natural Resources. Sheriff Haston advised that this appears to be an isolated incident.
