The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office has been approved to purchase three used police cruisers.
The vehicles are being provided by the Georgia State Patrol.
The sheriff’s office is purchasing a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria, 2007 Dodge Charger, and a 2008 Dodge Charger.
Colors of the cruisers are silver and black, so the sheriff’s office does not have to paint the vehicles to match their current ones.
Before voting on approving the purchase, Commissioner Kenneth Ashworth, who has personal ties to the sheriff’s office, made a brief statement.
“After talking with the attorney, he told me there is no laws or anything thing against me voting for purchases for the sheriff’s department, but I can not vote for anything benefiting my son, whether it be a raise or benefits”, said Ashworth. “I will abstain from those decisions.”
Total cost for all three cruisers comes in at just shy of thirteen thousand dollars.
The commissioners voted in unanimous fashion to pull the trigger on the purchase.
In other matters, the commissioners voted to table the purchasing of a new work truck for the Building Maintenance Department.
More discussion will take place during the work session for the commissioners’ meeting in March.
Currently, the department is using a 2002 Ford F-150 with over 120,000 miles on it.
