Elbert County Will Have a New Sheriff in January

November 7, 2012

For the first time in over a decade, Elbert County will have a new Sheriff come January 8th.

In an extremely close race, Democratic challenger Melvin Andrews took 4,154 total votes in Elbert County to Republican Incumbent Sheriff Barry Haston’s 3,874 votes. Andrews took in 51.71% of the total vote, and Haston brought in 48.23%.

In a statement late last night, Andrews said he was very pleased with the results.

“Well I am just as happy as I can be; I am glad the citizens stood behind me and made this day possible. Words do not express the support I have gotten through this election. I thank everybody, thank everybody for their prayers, and God bless them all. Come January 1st I look forward to serving all of them”, said Andrews.

Elbert County Sheriff Barry Haston could not be reached last night for comment on the election results.
