The Elbert County Blue Devil Wrestling squad had a successful Sectional Tournament on February 7th and 8th. The Devils qualified 7 wrestlers to the State Tournament and placed 3rd in Sectionals according to Head Coach Shane Anderson.
Jamarcus Allen in the 106 weight class got a 4th place finish and knocked off the Area 1 Champion to qualify for State.
Bain Johnson at 113 will be returning to the State Tournament for the second time with his second place finish.
Tysean Hall placed 4th in the 160 class after losing to the sectional champion in a tough match. Hall did qualify for State and this will be his first.
Dylan Sanders finished in 2nd in the 170 class and will be returning to the State Tournament for the second time.
AJ Edmond finished 2nd in the 182 weight class and will be attending the State Tournament for the first time.
Dessen Bolton came out on top at the 220 class. This is Bolton’s first Sectional Title and his third trip to the State Tournament.
Ken Allen also finished on top of his 285 weight class. This is also Allen’s first Sectional Title and will be his second trip to the State Tournaments.
Coach Anderson went on to say this was a team record 5 finalists at the Sectional Tournament. All 7 wrestlers will now be one of the top 8 wrestlers in their weight class in AAA. The Devils also qualified the 2nd highest number of wrestlers for the State Tournament.
The State Competition has been changed due to the inclement weather in Metro Atlanta. According to the AJC, GHSA will now have to find a new venue for the tournament as there is a scheduling conflict at the Gwinnett Arena. The Tournament will now take place on February 21st and 22nd. GHSA will determine a location soon.
