The Elbert County Blue Devils took down the undefeated Hart County Bulldogs 23-21 Friday, October 25th. With the win the Devils would improve to 5-0 in the region, 6-2 overall, and will control their own destiny in the region.
The Blue Devils would be forced to punt on their first offensive drive after the opening kick was returned to midfield. This would give the Bulldogs the opportunity to strike first and they would go up 7-0 after converting a 4th and goal at the half yard line. However, the Blue Devils would answer as QB Mecole Hardman would score from two yards out. A missed extra point would allow Hart to keep a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter would see the Devils turn the ball over trying to field a bouncing punt which was fumbled and recovered by Hart County. The Bulldogs would drive down the field and again be held to a 4th and goal and again convert for a score going up 14-6. The Devils would put a drive together and get a huge run from Trey Barnett to get down to the 1 yard line. Zac Allen would punch the ball into the endzone and Mecole Hardman would convert a two point conversion to tie the game up at 14 going into the half.
Coming out to start the second half the Blue Devil defense, who had been playing well, would come out with chin straps buckled only giving up 2 yards in the 3rd quarter to the Hart offense. Trey Barnett would score from 10 yards out for the Devils and this would give Hart County their first deficit to overcome this season. A failed two point conversion would take the score to 20-14. With 3:10 left in the 3rd the Bulldogs would, however, be able to return a 65 yard punt and a good extra point would give Hart the lead 21-20 heading into the 4th quarter
As any good rivalry game should be this game would be decided in the final quarter. Elbert would put a drive together at the beginning of the quarter but be cut short and have to settle for a 23 yard field goal which kicker Cross York would provide. After that the Blue Devil defense would shut the door on the Hart County Bulldogs giving them their first loss of the season 23-21.
