Franklin County High School students are mourning the loss of one of their own  after a wreck over the weekend.

It happened Saturday on SR63.

According to Franklin County Sheriff Stevie Thomas, 16-year old Matt Walters was driving down SR63 near his home when his vehicle suddenly left the road and hit a tree.

Walters was life-flighted to Greenville Memorial Hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Thomas said witnesses driving behind Walters’ vehicle told authorities he did not appear to make any attempt to stop or avoid going off the road.

Thomas said it appears Walters may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Friends have been posting condolences on Walters’ Facebook page all weekend.

Walters was known for his athletic ability as a Franklin County Lion.

Walters played a number of different positions for the team on both offense and defense.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
