Thanksgiving travelers in Georgia can rest easy again this year, as the Georgia Department of Transportation announced plans to suspend all construction related lane closures for the Thanksgiving Day travel period.
According to Georgia DOT District Engineer Bayne Smith, there about three thousand accidents on Georgia roads during the Thanksgiving holiday period; on average more than a dozen people die and a thousand more are injured each year.
So that Georgians and motorists passing through the state can arrive safely at their Thanksgiving destinations, the Department of Transportation is suspending lane closures on Interstates and major state routes beginning at noon on Wednesday and lasting until 9:00pm Sunday, December 1st.
Motorists traveling can access real-time, statewide, route-specific information on accidents, road work, traffic, and weather conditions using Georgia 511.
