Georgia DOT Urges Caution on Northeast Georgia Roads, Bridges

January 25, 2013

UPDATED 11:20am 1/25/2013

Original forecasts from yesterday afternoon had northeast Georgia receiving some potentially icy weather in the early morning hours; that has now changed.

The updated weather forecasts show that Elbert and surrounding counties are expected to receive a small amount of precipitation.

Georgia DOT Spokeswoman Teri Pope said if you are traveling anywhere in northeast Georgia, to be careful near bridges.

“In northeast Georgia there are over 750 bridges on state routes and interstates”, said Pope. “Think about those bridges when planning out your route and slow down when you approach a bridge.”

She says that DOT crews are currently active in six counties in northeast Georgia.

“We are actively working in six counties now”, explained Pope. “The temperature will be the biggest factor as we move forward on whether this situation will get better or worse.”

A winter weather warning will be in effect in northeast Georgia until 6:00pm this evening.
