Funeral services will take place Wednesday in Hartwell for Hart County Commissioner Dan Reyen.

Reyen died Saturday at his home.

The cause of death is not known.

A retired Army Major, Reyen had served as the District 2 Commissioner for Hart County since 2002 and had lived in Hart County since 1970.

Reyen was known for his ability to add balance to commission discussions on major issues, often times playing devil’s advocate in an attempt to get both sides of an issue on the table.

State Representative Alan Powell worked with Reyen and the Hart County Commission Board on dozens of issues over the years.

Powell called Reyen a man who stood for what he believed in.

“I worked with Reyen over the years and Dan was just very straightforward and he was to the point with his beliefs and you had to respect him for that,” said Powell.

Those who lived in his district praised Reyen’s staunch support of many local charities, including the Northeast Georgia Council on Domestic Violence.

Funeral services for Reyen will be held Wednesday at 2p from the Hartwell Chapel of Strickland Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Nancy Hart Memorial Park with full military honors.

Dan Reyen was 68.
