Hart County authorities and investigators with the GBI are working to identify skeletal remains found Tuesday.

Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland said Tuesday the remains were found Monday evening about 6p, but would not say where.

However, Cleveland did say they are that of an adult male.

“On October 22nd, late in the day, human skeletal remains have been discovered in Hart County,” Cleveland said Tuesday. “A possible ID has been obtained, and that’s all it is, a possible identification, but it has not been confirmed. Hart County investigators and agents with the GBI are conducting an investigation to determine a possible cause of death.”

Cleveland said the remains were being collected as of mid-Tuesday afternoon and are being sent to the GBI Crime lab in Atlanta for positive identification.

Cleveland would not say if foul play was involved.

“The cause of death has not been determined. Only the skeletal remains are there; there’s not a body,” Cleveland said. “I will tell you this, every time something like this comes up, we treat it as a homicide until an investigation tells us different.”
