Two game previews for tonight’s football Stephens County at Monroe Area Stephens County is 4-1 overall, 1-1 in Region 8-AAAA and Monroe Area is 5-0, 2-0 and No. 7 Stephens County won 51-21 in 2011. Stephens County is primarily a running team, lead by Senior TB Chaz Thornton. Thornton has 121 of the Indians’ 160 carries for 791 rushing yards, including 245 on 40 carries against Hart County on Sept. 14. Thornton is receiving interest from Clemson, Georgia Tech,South Carolina and Tennessee, among others. Monroe Area has the state’s highest-scoring team, averaging 51.4 points after scoring at least 50 in four of the first five games. The Purple Hurricanes are led by QB Stanton Truitt, a former Peachtree Ridge player who has rushed for about 700 yards. These teams were the preseason favorites to win the region and both teams need this win to stay in a race for the Region 8-AAAA crown. Stephens lost to Chestatee two weeks ago so if Stephens County loses this game it most likely will finish no higher than third place in the region.
Elbert County is on the Road to face Morgan County. Both teams need a victory tonight to stay in contention for Region 8-AAA. The Blue Devils racked up 566 yards last week against Oconee County. Tyshon Dye, K’taro Cade and Mecole Hardman all had over 100 yards rushing by Half time. The final score was 62-21 and kept the Blue Devils perfect in Region Play at 2-0 with Morgan,North Oconee and Hart next on the schedule. Morgan County lost last week to North Oconee by a score of 35-7. Three plays were the difference in last week’s game that has put Morgan County in a must win situation tonight against Elbert County. Both teams run the wing T. Morgan County wants to snap the ball every 10 seconds, so the difference tonight could be solely in the Linebacker play of the Blue Devils who get last season’s leading tackler back at Linebacker, Senior Eric Eberhart.
