The University System of Georgia Board of Regents voted last Tuesday to promote Regent William “Dink” NeSmith Jr. of Athens, Georgia from Vice Chairman to Chairman.
NeSmith will serve a one-year term and will succeed outgoing Chairman Ben Tarbutton III of Sandersville.
NeSmith is co-owner and president of Athens-based Community Newspapers Inc., which publishes several dozen newspapers in Georgia, Florida and in the Carolinas as well.
The Jesup, Ga., native graduated from The University of Georgia in 1970 and is a past president of the UGA Alumni Association.
NeSmith was appointed to the Board of Regents by then-Gov. Sonny Perdue back in 2008, representing Georgia’s 10th Congressional District.
Also last Tuesday, Board members elected Regent Philip Wilheit Sr. of Gainesville, Georgia to a one-year term as Vice Chairman.
