Barbara Ann Pitts Shell

 Barbara Ann Pitts Shell, 67, of 220 Laurel Drive, Athens, wife of Harry Earl Shell, passed away Thursday morning, May 17, 2012, at St. Mary's Hospice House in Bogart.

Mrs. Shell was born in Elbert County, July 7, 1944, to the late Juit and Onie Caldwell Pitts. She was a retired food service worker at Clark County Middle School, a member of Green Acres Baptist Church, and a former member of Elberton First Baptist Church.

Left to cherish her memories are her husband of 49 years, Harry Earl Shell; daughter, Sonya Shell of Atlanta; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Anisa Shell of Hartwell; grandson, Ethan Shell; brother, Ben Pitts of Seneca, South Carolina; sisters, Estelle Parham and Jeanette Witcher, both of Elberton; and other special family, Karole Keith, Shirley and Charles Bishop, Jerry and Martha Shell, Jerry Scott Shell, and Elaine Shell.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by siblings, Flordene Hammonds and Dewey Pitts.

Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 2PM Sunday, May 20, in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Adams officiating. Interment will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery with Barry Witcher, Darrell Witcher, Matt Brown, Keith Caldwell, Rick Melton, Stroud Williams, Andy Elder, and Robbie Kidd serving as pallbearers. Jerry Scott Shell will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

The Shell family is at the home of Estelle Parham, 1350 Calhoun Falls Highway, Elberton, and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home from 5-8PM Saturday evening.

Louise Davis

Mrs. Louise Davis, 74 years old of 1817 Bakers Ferry Road, Elberton, passed away at her home Wednesday; May 16, 2012

Louise is survived by her husband of 55 years Earle S. Davis, Jr.; a daughter Julie (Rick) Weeks and two grandchildren Hannah Katherine Weeks and Ryan Davis Weeks all of Bishop, Georgia. She is also survived by sisters; Dorothea Gatlin, Florence Cunningham, Diane Graybeal and Eleanor Holland.

She was a long standing member of Elberton First Baptist Church, serving in many capacities. She loved her grandchildren dearly and happily played soccer and basketball with them.

After retirement of 30 years from Georgia Department of Corrections, she became a substitute teacher at Elbert County Middle School. She also volunteered at the Elbert County Library.

Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her parents Dolphus and Musette Singleton Holland; a brother James Holland and a sister Frances Price.

A funeral to celebrate Louise’s life will be held Saturday 2:00pm, May 19, 2012 at First Baptist Church, Elberton with the Reverend Raymond Scott officiating.

Visitation will be held in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. just prior to the service.

Entombment will be at Forest Hills Memorial Park, Washington Highway, Elberton, Georgia.

Broadus Parker Daniel

Mr. Broadus “Big B” Parker Daniel, 75 of Canon, Georgia, entered into rest Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Hartwell Healthcare Center, Hartwell, GA. Broadus was born in Elberton to the late Janie Olivia Gulley and George Parker Daniel. Broadus is survived by his wife, Ruby “Katie” Daniel. Broadus was a loving and caring husband. He didn’t have any children, but there is a dog that was very special to him, a Pug named Tea Rose.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at The Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Wright officiating. Committal services will follow at Rock Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, May 14, 2012 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Hicks Funeral Home.

Broadus started out working in Elberton with Grandpa Gulley as a farmer selling cows, produce, and grain, and then worked in Elberton for Colonial Grocery Store in the meat and produce department for 2 ½ years. Then Broadus went to work for the City of Elberton in the Water Filter Plant as an Operator and later retired after 36 ½ years of employment. Following Broadus’s retirement, he worked in Hartwell at Springs Finishing Plant as a Security Guard for 2 years and then at the McDonald’s in Hartwell as a host for 3 ½ years. Broadus was of the Baptist faith and was baptized at age 22. He attended Rock Branch Baptist Church in Elberton and sometimes visited First Baptist Church in Hartwell. He was a kind and gentle man that never met a stranger and always left everyone with a smile.

Lewis Smith

Lewis Smith, 73, of 2235 River Road, Elberton, Georgia husband of the late Jackie Inez Thompson Smith passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012 at his home.

Born in Elberton, Georgia July 21, 1938 to the late Charlie H. Smith and Nobie Gunter Smith. Mr. Smith was a retired sandblaster from the granite industry and a truck driver. He was a member of Fortsonia Baptist Church.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughter and son-in-law Yvonne and Mike Gordan of Danielsville, Georgia; son Charlie Howard Smith of Elberton, Georgia; son and daughter-in-law Curtis and Hope Smith of Winder, Georgia; son Donald Smith of Elberton, Georgia; son and daughter-in-law Chris and Carol Smith of Elberton, Georgia; sister Joyce "Kitty" Smith Cheek of Winder, Georgia; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by brothers L.H. Smith, J.A. Smith, Alton Smith, Maurice Smith, Curtis Smith, Herman Smith, Wesley Smith, Joe Smith and sisters Edna Tipaldos and Elma Crowley.

A Celebration of his life will be held Sunday, May 13 at 2PM in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Rev. David McConnell officiating. Interment will follow in Fortsonia Community Cemetery with C.J. Smith, Zach Smith, Derek Lord, Tyler Smith, Brandon Rucker, Mckinley Gordan and Amanda Smith serving as pallbearers. The Smith family will be at the home 2235 River Road, Elberton and will receive friends from 7-9PM Saturday night at Berry Funeral Home.

Edna Wheless Bridges

Mrs. Edna Wheless Bridges, passed away Monday morning, May 7, 2012 at Quiet Oaks Nursing Home in Crawford, GA at the age of 100.

Mrs. Bridges, of Carlton, GA, was the daughter of the late Henry L. and Siddie Belle Bridges Wheless. She was the wife of the late Fred E. Bridges. Mrs. Bridges worked through the years in the textile industry as a seamstress for Style Rite.

Mrs. Bridges is survived by a son, Stuart Bridges; a daughter, Frances White and her husband, Charles; and a daughter-in-law, Cathy Bridges. She also leaves behind one brother, Fred Wheless; one sister, Julia Walton; grandchildren: Wanda Compton(Chris), Charles White(Stacey), and Christy Coile(Chris); and 7 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Bridges was preceded in death by 2 sons, Eugene and Dennis Bridges, one brother, and several sisters.

A service to celebrate Mrs. Bridges’ life will be held Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church in Lexington, GA with Rev. James Olds officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday evening, May 8, 2012 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Hicks Funeral Home. Interment will be at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery.

Flowers will be graciously accepted, or donations may be made in Mrs. Bridges’ memory to Bethany Baptist Church, Centerville Rd., Lexington, GA 30648.

Julia Scoggins Smith

Julia "Maw-Maw" Scoggins Smith, 84, resident of Nancy Hart Nursing Center, Elberton, widow of Albert Walter Smith, passed away Monday morning, May 7, 2012, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Smith was born in Elbert County, July 12, 1927, to the late Andrew Jackson "Babe" Scoggins and Dicie Alice Gunter Scoggins. She was a retired seamstress from Elberton Manufacturing Company and a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Elberton.

Left to cherish her memories are her children, Sue Scarborough of Elberton, Lynn Raybon of Norwood, Elbert Smith of Royston, Jimmy Smith of Elberton, Timothy Smith of Elberton, and Ronnie Smith of Norwood; sixteen grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by one daughter, Sandra Cheryl; a great-grandchild; three sisters and seven brothers.

Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 12Noon Wednesday, May 9, in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Elder Tim WIlliams officiating. Interment will follow in Jordan Cemetery in Hartwell with Anthony Carter, Justin Carter, Wesley Carter, Shane Smith, Chris Smith, Cody Smith, Keith Richardson and Kyle Whitmire serving as pallbearers. The Smith family is at the residence of Jimmy and Cheryl Smith, 1564 Woodyard Road, Elberton, and will receive friends at the funeral home from 11AM-12Noon on Wednesday.

Glenda Ann Reid

Ms. Glenda Ann Reid,54, of Athens, GA passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2012. She was born in Elberton, GA to the late Ms. Hester M. Reid and Mr. Alton Jones.

She is survived by her father, Alton Jones, her son James Tracey Reid, 3 sisters, 6 brothers and a host of other family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 4, 2012 at 3:30 pm at the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, with Pastor Ronnie Young Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Richard Donald Bray

Mr. Richard Donald Bray 76, of 781 Beaver Run Ext., Bowman, Georgia passed away Friday; April 27, 2012 at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Bray was preceded in death by his parents Alma Louise Burch Bray and Dala Benjamin Bray.

Mr. Bray served in the United States Air Force, he was a member of Bowman Baptist for over 30 years; he was an active Shriner and Mason. Mr. Bray retired from Georgia Power after many years of service.

Mr. Bray is survived by his wife, Shirley A. Bray; a daughter Darla (Richard) DuBose of Norfolk, VA; two sons Gordon (Tess) Bray of Elberton, Georgia and Don Bray of Athens, Georgia. He is also survived by six grandchildren; a brother Steven Bray of Gaston, Alabama and a sister Joyce Bray of Athens, Georgia also a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Bray will be Monday, 1 p.m., April 30, 2012 at Bowman Baptist Church with Reverend Mike Petty officiating; internment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery, Bowman, Georgia . Visitation will be held at Hicks Funeral Home Sunday, April 29, 2012 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

William Clifford Payton, Jr.

Mr. William Clifford Payton, Jr., 85, of Elberton, GA passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Payton was the son of the late Catherine Sutton and William Clifford Payton, Sr. He was married to his precious bride of 64 years, Isabel Frances Young Payton.

Mr. Payton was a U.S. Navy Veteran, having served in World War II as a Seaman 1st Class with the Amphibious Unit, and the recipient of the Purple Heart Award. He was a Mason for over 50 years, and a deacon for 15 years. Mr. Payton loved his guitar and singing the old gospel hymns and bluegrass. His loved watching and feeding hummingbirds, and enjoyed growing beautiful flowers.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Payton is survived by a daughter, Billie Smith (Tony), five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind one brother, three sisters, and a beloved sister-in-law and her husband, Charlene and Wendell Cleveland. Mr. Payton was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters.

A service to celebrate Mr. Payton’s life will be held Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at The Chapel of Hicks Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. just prior to the service. Entombment will be at Forest Hills Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The American Cancer Society.

Mary Agnes Ward

Mrs. Mary Agnes Ward, 82, of Elberton, GA, passed away Monday, April 23, 2012 at Heardmont Nursing Home.

Mrs. Ward was the daughter of the late Reuben and Dora McCullough Anderson. She celebrated 54 years of marriage with her husband, the late L. Lamar Ward. She was the owner/operator of The Vacuum Center in Elberton for more than 25 years.

Mrs. Ward is survived by three sons: Andy Ward (Nancy) of Acworth, GA, David Ward of Marietta, GA, and Wayne Ward (Polly) of Elberton, GA. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Josh Harper, Will Ward, Sarah Ward, Ashley Haynes, Alyson Counts, and Drew Ward; and six great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind one sister, Hazel Smith of Elberton. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Ward was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

A service to celebrate Mrs. Ward’s life will be Thursday, April 26, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Rock Branch Baptist Church, with Rev. Ken Wright officiating. A time of visitation for family and friends will be Wednesday, April 25, 2012 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hicks Funeral Home. Interment will be at Rock Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Kathlene Smith Trippe

Kathlene Smith Trippe, 91, of 2117 Dr. George Ward Road, Elberton, Georgia, widow of the late William Julius "Billie" Trippe passed away Saturday April 21, 2012 at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born in Elbert County, January 5, 1921 to the late Christopher "Tabor" Thomas Smith and Winnie Snellings Smith. She was a member of Eliam United Methodist Church, a past member of the VFW Auxiliary, she worked at Elberton Mills and was a Lab Technician at Georgia Synthetics before her retirement. Mrs. Trippe was a very active lady with a passion for Quilting, Gardening and her family.

Left to cherish her memories are her daughters Carolyn T. Wilder of Elberton, Georgia; Annette Trippe of Marietta, Georgia; son and daughter-in-law Donald R. and Harriet Trippe of Suches, Georgia; sisters Irene Butler and Winnie Mae Fox both of Elberton, Georgia; brother and sister-in-law George T. and Virginia Smith of Butler, Georgia; sister-in-law Hilda Trippe King of Conyers, Georgia; grandchildren Scott and Angela Wilder, LaDonna Wilder and Steve Hale, William Julius Trippe II, Alex Trippe and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her sisters Julia Maples and Eleanor Wilson and a brother Julius Smith.

Funeral services celebrating her life will be held Monday, April 23 at 2PM in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Rev. J. Wesley Privett and Scott Wilder officiating. Interment will follow in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery with Aaron Smith, William J. Trippe II, Alex Trippe, Jamie Hale, Steve Hale and Scott Wilder serving as pallbearers. The Trippe family will be at the home of her sister Irene Butler 2220 Hudson Road, Elberton and will receive friends from 1-2PM just prior to the service at Berry Funeral Home.
