National Collection Week for the Samaritan’s Purse is coming up on Monday, where they will accept shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, and many other items.
Southeast Regional Manager Rhonda Anderson talks about the items to include and not include in the shoeboxes.
“You can’t put any liquids, perishables, any toys that mimic war toys so no guns, knives, or anything like that”, said Anderson. “Other than that you can put your heart’s desire in there like other toys, school supplies, and hygiene products.”
This is the 20th Anniversary of Operation Christmas Child, which began in 1993, and since that year over 100 million gift-filled shoeboxes have been given to children in more than one hundred countries.
The organization is expecting to distribute roughly ten million boxes this year alone.
Anderson says this gesture is simple, but can really impact a young child’s life in a distant country.
“It’s so simple in a shoebox, it’s crazy to think that a shoebox can do that”, said Anderson. “Especially around Thanksgiving at a time when you are looking to give back and say thanks for all that we have. It’s a great way to get your family involved to provide a simple gesture that will impact a life.”
Those in Elbert County wanting to participate can drop off shoeboxes on November 18th between the hours of 10:00am until 11:00am at Northside Baptist Church located on North Oliver Street.
The church will accept gifts all throughout the week of November 18th thru November 25th.
