A major road resurfacing project in Lavonia is due to resume today and motorists should expect delays right through the weekend.

According to Georgia Department of Transportation spokesperson Teri Pope, contractors will resume work on SR77 Extension this morning.

“The contractor is trying to get finished with work in Lavonia,” Pope said. “So, they’re going to be working Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Work is going to begin on the SR77 Connector. The work hours on Thursday and Friday will be from 8:30a to 2:30p. On SR59, they’re allowed to work from 8:30a to 4p on Thursday and Friday.”

Over the weekend, however, Pope said construction will be going on well into the evening hours on Saturday and Sunday.

For all four days, a pilot car will be leading motorists through the work areas.

Pope said contractors hope to finish the work on the 77 Connector and SR59 from Vickery St to Old City Park by Monday morning.

However, Pope said the rest of the work on SR 59 will continue next week.

“Work will continue during the day next week during the day. On SR59 they have the patching done and the widening of the shoulders. Now, all they have to do is the resurfacing,” she said.

State Route 59 resurfacing is 6.72 miles long from Brown Road to Wright’s Branch Road and was awarded to E.R. Snell Contracting of Snellville for a contract price of $1.39 million.

State Route 77 Connector resurfacing is 5.16 miles long from State Route 77 to east of State Route 59 and was awarded to E.R. Snell Contracting of Snellville for a contract price of $1.39 million.
