Salute the Troops Parade takes Place this Friday

February 11, 2013

Soldiers from the 1/214th Artillery Division located in Elbert County will be honored with a parade this coming Friday, February 15th.

On that day, troops will participate in a convoy that will be visiting each of Elbert County’s schools starting at 10:00am.

The parade will start at 1:00pm in the Granite Bowl. The route will be the annual ECCHS Homecoming parade route, which heads up Church Street, turns onto Tusten Street, and then finishes on Heard Street to the Elberton Square.

Elberton Main Street Director Sissie Herring encourages everyone who can attend, to do so.

“We have not had a parade like this in many years, so take your lunch time to come and support the troops”, said Herring. “The main thing I am asking Elberton to do for this parade is to line these streets. I don’t want these troops walking through the streets and there is no body there.”

A special ceremony will follow the parade on the downtown square.

The ceremony features several speakers including Elberton City Mayor Larry Guest, Representative Tom McCall, and Major General Jim Butterworth among others.

Elbert County School Superintendant Rick Higginbotham is also chipping in to help make this a great event.

“If you would like to get your children out of school for that day for the parade at 1:00pm, it will be an excused absence”, explained Herring. “I encourage everyone to get your kids, because this type of event does not happen every day.”

Of the 240 soldiers in the 1/214th, only 40 have been apart of a deployment, which means that this deployment will be the first one for 200 soldiers and their families.
