Starting today is the official beginning of squirrel hunting season in the State of Georgia.
The season lasts from August 15th, 2012 up until February 28th, 2013. Melissa Cummings, who is with the Communications Department of the Wildlife Management Division, says that the start of squirrel hunting season normally marks the beginning of hunting in Georgia.
“That’s one of the seasons that really kicks off the hunting season for the year.” said Cummings. “It was one of the most popular opportunities for the longest time.”
Cummings says that squirrel hunting is a great way to introduce young children into hunting.
“We want to encourage people to get out there and done some squirrel hunting as well. One reason is because it is a great opportunity to introduce young people into hunting. It is real active, and if you have buddies that maybe have some squirrel dogs, it’s a great chance for the kids to have fun, and watch those dogs work the woods.” said Cummings.
In terms of number of hunters and harvest, squirrels are the second most pursued small game species in Georgia, behind doves.
