Motorists who frequent State Route 172 can continue to expect traffic delays in the foreseeable future.
Currently construction work is underway to add an additional two feet of width to the roadway, and while work is taking place, the road will be limited to one lane in some locations.
The widening of the highway is only the first phase of work on the road, as Georgia DOT spokesperson Teri Pope explains what follows the addition of the shoulders.
“Once we get the shoulders finished we will go in and start patching, removing the damaged sections of roadway that are deeper, and once we do those deep patches, then you will see the final resurfacing”, said Pope. “This results in this project being more expensive than your typical resurfacing project.”
Clauses in the contract prevent work from taking place during peak driving conditions in the morning and evening hours near the city of Bowman and Hartwell, GA.
Work will take place Mondays thru Fridays, as long as weather permits.
Motorists traveling through the construction zone should reduce speed, use caution, and be alert to changing traffic conditions.
The estimated project completion date is January 31st, 2014; but Pope says she expects the work to be completed before the Georgia DOT’s construction season ends in November.
