Three Dead After Train Strikes Car in Stephens County

May 6, 2013

Three people from Austell are dead after a violent car-train collision in Stephens County.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, the Amtrak crescent line collided with a vehicle at about 9:45 p.m. Friday night on Grant Smith road, near the summit subdivision.

“The train T-boned the 2008 Mazda,” said Shirley. “It was a violent crash. It carried the vehicle about 300 feet up the track. It turned over several times before it landed in a ravine upside down where it caught fire.”

Names of the victims have not been released as of Saturday afternoon pending notification of next of kin.  Shirley says the victims are two females and one male who all lived together in Austell.

He said that the three were headed to Toccoa to visit friends.

Their bodies have been taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab.

Shirley says that at this point, alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the accident.

Nobody was injured on the Crescent, which was headed northbound into Toccoa from Atlanta and Gainesville.

The Crescent Line did not leave Toccoa until nearly 2 a.m., over four hours past its scheduled departure time.
