Two Thefts, One Common Denominator

Three Elberton men are facing a substantial list of felony theft charges.

According to Investigator Darren Scarborough with the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office, a burglary was reported off of Jaudon Road on March 11th.

During that burglary, Scarborough says a total of nine guns and one television were stolen from that residence.

Further investigation by the sheriff’s office led to the arrest of 18-year-old Brent Matthew Berryman, 18-year-old Cedric Benard Leigh, and 19-year-old Haven Dewitt Rucker all of Elberton.

Each of those three are facing one count each of Burglary and nine counts each of Felony Theft by Taking, one for each gun stolen from that home.

Scarborough says that a majority of those stolen items have been recovered.

“Elbert County Sheriff’s Office has recovered six of those nine guns that were taken”, said Scarborough. “There are three guns and a television that was taken that has not been recovered.”

All three were transported to the Elbert County Detention Center following their arrests, where all three were denied bond by an Elbert County Magistrate Judge.

That’s not quite all, as Berryman is also facing charges from another incident that was reported more recently, on March 17th, in the Jaudon Road area.

Berryman wasn’t alone during the theft, as he was joined by 18-year-old Kentavious Clark of Elberton.

“Was taking some scrap metal out of a gentleman’s front yard, and he caught them taking the metal out of his yard”, said Scarborough. “As a result of that, they have pending charges of Burglary, Criminal Trespass, and Misdemeanor Theft by Taking.”

Clark was also taken to the Elbert County Detention Center after his arrest, but he has since been released from the detention center on bond.
